You’ll notice that I haven’t compared Medland’s compositions to any familiar landmarks, nor attempted to describe it. To do so would do the textures and colors of this music an injustice.

The listener enters THE AVIARY, which is lovely but unfamiliar, full of melodic and harmonic textures even when the rhythm isn’t clearly defined (the very antithesis of some contemporary “gypsy jazz”) - Jazz Lives

Tobie is a Violinist, Composer and Producer from South East London. Tobie has multiple credits for the BBC and is director of both the Gypsy Jazz Festival of London and Future Fable Records. Tobie learnt the trade touring the North of England, busking, and hustling for gigs in bars and restaurants. Since then, they have toured Europe and performed at iconic venues across the country.

Acclaimed violinist, composer and producer Tobie Medland has been widely credited as one of the foremost young British improvising violinists, especialy within the European lineage jazz style credited to Django Reinhardt. Their genre-defying approach is distinctly modern, drawing on contemporary jazz, impressionist classical and free improvisation. Tobies recent album with 'The Aviary' (a nonet with Sam Leak Tom Smith, Kit Massey, Helen Sanders-Hewett, Shirley Smart, Bim Williams, Sol Grimshaw and Marcus Penrose) was recently lauded by renowned Polish publication 'Laboratorium Muzycznych Fuzji': "Gypsy Jazz is often associated with the past and archaism. However, The Aviary, led by the talented violinist Tobie Medland, proves that this genre can be modern and fresh".

With multiple BBC credits, a cross-European tour and JazzFM features under their belt, Tobie is an accomplished member of the British Jazz scene. Tobie learnt the trade touring the North of England, busking and hustling for gigs in bars and restuarants. Since then, they have tourred Europe and held residencies at several London venues with 'Skylark Trio'.

Recent concerts include at The Vortex Jazz Club with Olli Soikkeli and at the home of the London Symphony Orchestra 'LSO St. Luke's' as part of Fapy Lafertin's Quartet. Tobie has released several records and performed at prestigious European venues including St. John's Smith Square, Jazzbina Sarajevo, Crazy Coq's Soho, Leeds Town Hall and 'Mostar Gipsy Festival'.

Tobie is a busy producer and is director of the Gypsy Jazz Festival of London and Future Fable Records. Amongst Tobies other productions is the upcoming 'Covent Garden Jazz Festival.' Tobie has worked with some of the world's foremost jazz musicians. They have also contributed as writer to 'The Syncopated Times' and been interviewd on JazzFM, London Jazz News and JazzViews.
